Following the referendum held in four regions of Ukraine and Moscow’s decision to annex these regions to its territory, the European Union imposed new sanctions against the country.
According to European media reports, the European Union members approved a new sanctions package against Russia in their meeting in Brussels on Wednesday.
This sanctions package includes setting a price ceiling for oil imports from Russia and adding dozens of officials of this country to the list of European sanctions against Moscow.
Since the beginning of the Ukraine crisis in 2014, the European Union has imposed 7 sanctions packages against Russia, including economic, financial, political and diplomatic sanctions. This is the eighth sanctions package from Brussels against Moscow.
Referendums were recently held in four regions of Ukraine including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia. In the Donetsk region, 99.23% supported joining Russia. The participation rate in this referendum was reported as 97.51%. In Luhansk, 98.42 percent voted in favor of joining Russia. In Kherson, the support rate was 87.5% and in Zaporozhye, 90.1%.
