British airports experience paralysis due to technical malfunctions at passport gates.
The British media reported that the failure of the electronic gates for passport verification in all the airports of this country caused disruption and disturbance in these airports.
On Saturday, the electronic gates for passport verification in all the airports of this country were disabled due to what was declared a “technical fault” and created chaos and disorder in the work of the airports at the same time as the weekend.
According to the “BBC” network, this disruption caused long queues at English airports, including the important airports of “Heathrow”, “Manchester” and “Gatwick”.
A news source told the BBC that the widespread disruption, which first began on Friday night, was caused by what he called “a problem in the information technology sector”.
All airports across the UK that use the technology were affected by the disruption. The e-passport validation gate speeds up the passport control process at airports by allowing travelers to scan their passports electronically. This system uses facial recognition technology and takes the passenger’s photo to confirm his identity.
Following the failure of this system, travelers intending to enter England at airports were forced to stand in queues for checking and confirming passports manually.
The English newspaper “Metro” also wrote that the occurrence of a huge technical defect in the special gates for electronic passport checking in the whole country caused the airports of this country to become “a scene of total chaos”.
This problem forced airport passengers to stand in long queues for several hours and made them angry.
One of the passengers who arrived at Heathrow Airport in London wrote on Twitter: “I witnessed complete chaos after landing. I stood in a side line for two hours to get to the main line. The gates were broken.”
Another passenger who entered Gatwick station described the situation there as “absolutely ridiculous”.
A spokeswoman for Gatwick Airport said the problem started on Friday night, but the queues formed at the airport had reduced since Saturday morning.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Heathrow Airport wrote: “We are aware of a nationwide issue with electronic gates managed by Border Patrol. This issue is not unique to Heathrow Airport and has affected other entry points as well. “Our teams have been working closely with Border Patrol to help resolve the issue as quickly as possible and we have recruited additional staff to manage queues and ensure the well-being of passengers.”
A spokesman for the British Home Office also said that the country’s border force has put in place “robust programs” to recruit officers in order to minimize disruption and waiting times.
