Biden called for more strict gun control laws.
The President of the United States, while supporting the free possession of firearms in the country, but called for the tightening of control laws regarding the carrying of such weapons.
As the number of shootings in the United States has increased in recent weeks and many people, including children, have been killed, US President Joe Biden has called for tighter controls on Americans’ freedom to carry firearms.
Biden said Thursday evening that the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, which guarantees the right of citizens to own firearms, is not absolute and that more control over the existence of weapons in the hands of the people is needed.
“I respect the culture, traditions and concerns of the legal owners of firearms,” he told the American people about his government’s efforts, according to the RIA Novosti website. At the same time, like all other rights, the Second Amendment is not absolute. “They are not unlimited and never will be.”
The US president has said that an increase in mass shootings in the country requires “reasonable action” by US leaders.
Biden added: “I want to make it clear that these [actions] do not mean taking a firearm from anyone. “In fact, we believe that firearms owners who are responsible and act responsibly should be role models for all gun owners.”
He called for a ban on the sale of high-capacity semi-automatic weapons in the United States, and for tightening firearms controls.
Under current US law, Americans can buy semi-automatic weapons and ammunition with up to 30 rounds of ammunition.
“We must ban high-capacity weapons and ammunition,” RIA Novosti quoted the US president as saying. “And if we can not ban them, we should increase the age limit for buying them from 18 to 21.”
