Washington’s claim: Saudi Arabia is determined to end the conflict in Yemen, but Iran is not.
The US special envoy for Yemen claimed that Saudi Arabia was determined to end the conflict in Yemen, but that Iran was less determined.
The US special envoy for Yemen, Timothy Linderking, said Saudi Arabia was determined to end the conflict in Yemen and rely on recent developments such as a ceasefire and the formation of a presidential council.
In an interview with Al-Hurra, Linderking said that for the first time since the start of the conflict in 2014, Yemen is facing an exceptional opportunity for peace.
He added: “It seems that Iran’s behavior to make the conflict critical has not changed as it did before the ceasefire, and Iran is less determined than Saudi Arabia to end the conflict peacefully. Unfortunately, Iran escalated the conflict before the ceasefire. “Even now, there is no change in Iran’s attitude towards Yemen.”
“We are closely monitoring the conduct of the parties, but our current focus is definitely on the ceasefire, and we hope that it will continue until June 2,” Linderking said, according to the Gulf Online website. “After that, the United States will consider extending the ceasefire and relying on it for a permanent ceasefire.”
He emphasized the need to focus on Saudi Arabia, and said that “70,000 Americans live in Saudi Arabia and 60,000 in the United Arab Emirates.” They reside in these two countries.
