After Ashraf Ghani’s remarks about the possibility of his return to Afghanistan, the US Deputy Secretary of State said that Washington no longer recognizes Ghani as the President of Afghanistan.
According to the regional office of Tasnim News Agency, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, in response to the remarks of fugitive Afghan President Ashraf Ghani about the possibility of his return to the country, stated that Washington no longer recognizes him as President of Afghanistan.
Three days after fleeing Afghanistan, on Wednesday, August 17, Ghani released a video message announcing that he was in the UAE, saying he wanted to return to Afghanistan to “fight for the rights and values of the people.”
The former Afghan president also claimed in the video that he had no intention of fleeing the country and that his guards had prevented him from being killed as he left Afghanistan.
A former Afghan Foreign Ministry official, meanwhile, denied Ghani’s allegations that he had asked for his political passport from the foreign ministry a few days before fleeing and that he knew he was leaving the country.
