US Senator: The model of Iran’s secondary sanctions on Russia should be implemented.
The Republican senator called for economic pressure on Russia, similar to Iran’s secondary sanctions model.
A Republican senator on Sunday called for economic pressure on Russia, similar to Iran’s secondary sanctions model.
“We can cut off some Russian banks from Swift,” Republican Sen. Pat Tommy of Pennsylvania tweeted. But to bring the Russian economy to its knees, we must isolate all Russian banks from the global economy. “This requires Iranian-style secondary sanctions that force foreign banks to choose between trading with the United States or Russia.”
Another hardline Republican senator criticized the US president, calling for similar action against Iran and cutting off Russia’s access to Swift’s financial system.
Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton told Fox News that the United States could remove Russia from Swift’s financial system, even if Europe did not want to.
He went on to say that Europe did not want to cut off Swift access to Iran, but was eventually forced to.
“Russia can also be excluded from Swift,” Cotton said. We did the same with Iran during the Trump era, even though our European allies did not want to do the same. We have the power to take these steps. “But Joe Biden is not willing to do that.”
Reuters reports quoting one of the central bankers of the Eurozone that a decision will be made in the next few days to cut off Russia’s access to the Swift system.
“The Swift issue is a matter of a few days that will be resolved in a short time,” said the central bank governor, who did not want to be named.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonite said on Saturday that Western partners were close to suspending Russia’s access to Swift, the global interbank payment system. The Ukrainian president also said that Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi had spoken in a telephone conversation with him in favor of cutting off Russia’s access to Swift’s international payment system.
