US intervention in Lebanon’s internal affairs
The US ambassador in Beirut said that some parties might try to postpone the elections, noting that the Lebanese parliamentary elections should be held on time.
The US ambassador to Beirut said that the Lebanese parliamentary elections should be held on May.
“There is concern that some powerful parties may try to postpone the election because the election results may cause them to lose power in the House of Representatives,” he told Reuters. “There is a consensus in the international community on the need to hold elections in a timely and transparent manner, and there is no room for maneuver in this regard.”
According to the Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed website, the UN Security Council last week stressed the importance of holding free, fair, transparent and inclusive elections on time (May 15, 2022).
The Lebanese parliament approved the early parliamentary elections last September, and the presidency opposed the issue from the outset and called for a correction. The Lebanese system is parliamentary, and the prime minister and the president come out of it. That is why it is so important to hold parliamentary elections every four years, but the previous elections, for the first time in nine years and in Following a 5-year delay, it was held on May 8, 2018.
