US-European statement: We oppose the partition of Libya.
The joint statement of the four European countries and the United States on Libya, while rejecting any action that would lead to the division of Libya, emphasizes a single government that can hold elections.
The United States, Britain, France, Italy and Germany issued joint statements on the situation in Libya on Saturday morning.
“We reject any attempt to divide Libya,” the statement said, according to the Al-Jazeera website.
“We oppose the creation of parallel institutions or the seizure of power by force,” the statement said. “Libya needs a single government that can govern the whole country and hold elections.”
“We urge the parliament and the [Libyan] government to finalize the legal basis for the elections,” the European Union and the United States said in a statement.
“We welcome the international statement that is in line with our position on rejecting the seizure of power in Libya,” said Abdul Hamid al-Dubaiba, the prime minister of Libya’s national unity government.
“The UN position has resolved the issue of the continuation of the work of the Libyan parties in accordance with the decisions of the political agreement,” al-Dabiba explained, according to the report.
“We are committed to continuing the policy of transparency regarding government spending in Libya,” he added.
Earlier, the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abul Gheit, announced the organization’s full readiness to achieve national reconciliation in Libya.
The National Reconciliation Project was one of the missions assigned to the Libyan Presidential Council in March 2021 and was expected to be prepared before the December 24 elections.
