Ukrainian staff at the US embassy in Kiev say they feel the US government has left them without any support or way of escape.
According to Foreign Policy, the staff wrote a letter to US State Department officials asking Washington to help them escape the conflict zone, relocate, issue US visas, and provide specific contact lines with the State Department.
“We have worked with you for two decades and have always had great faith in the US government,” the letter said. We need your help now. Now is not the time to wait and research. It is time for action. “Your actions can save our lives.”
Foreign Policy writes the letter recalls the concerns of those who worked with the US Embassy in Afghanistan. The United States at the time released its embassy staff after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.
“We have already been told that Ukraine is not Afghanistan,” US embassy staff in Kiev wrote. “We do not want that to be the case, but it is not fair if the difference is the size of the bombs that fly over our heads.”
Russia ordered a military strike on Ukraine on Thursday morning (February 24th). This development came days after Moscow formally recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine.
Russia says Ukraine has not fulfilled its obligations under the Minsk agreements reached in 2014 and 2015 to resolve the dispute between separatists and Kiev. Vladimir Putin says Russia’s military operation is aimed at demilitarizing Ukraine and “de-Naziizing” it.
Western countries have imposed sanctions on Russia on several occasions in response to Russia’s military action in Ukraine. European countries are currently considering cutting off Russia’s access to Swift’s banking messaging system.
