US claim: “We have killed a senior al-Qaeda official in Syria.”
The U.S. military says a senior al-Qaeda operative has been killed in a drone strike in northwestern Syria, according to the Associated Press.
John Riggsby, a spokesman for the US Central Command, said in a statement that an airstrike in northwestern Syria had killed Abdul Hamid al-Matr, a senior al-Qaeda leader.
“We have no information that civilians were killed in the attack, which was carried out by the MQ-9 UAV,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
Centcom claims that the assassination of the prominent al-Qaeda leader will undermine the terrorist group’s ability to plan global attacks.
The attack comes as US forces are illegally present on Syrian soil, and hundreds of civilians have been killed by Syrian forces under the pretext of carrying out airstrikes against terrorists.
