United Nations: It is not possible to provide life-saving aid in Afghanistan without the presence of female workers.
The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced in a statement that the Afghan governing body has banned women from working in the UN office in Nangarhar province.
UNAMA added: We remind the actual authorities that the UN agencies cannot operate and provide their life-saving support without female staff.
“Antonio Guterres”, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, while condemning the ban on the work of the organization’s female employees in Nangarhar province, warned: if this restriction is not lifted, our ability to deliver life-saving aid to the people who need it will be weakened.
After the Taliban banned the work of women in the UN office in Nangarhar province, the said organization has told about 3,300 of its employees in Afghanistan, including about 400 female employees, not to show up at work for the next two days.
Stephen Dujarric, the spokesperson of the United Nations, told reporters in New York that UNAMA has received the Taliban’s decision to ban women from working for the United Nations.
He added that the United Nations is investigating the effects of this decision by the Taliban and will meet with the officials of the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry in Kabul today (Wednesday, April 16) to seek more transparency.
The Taliban authorities have not commented on this matter so far.
