Ukraine: Iran opposes war
Ukraine’s foreign minister wrote on his Twitter account that Iran opposes war and supports peaceful solutions.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dimitro Kolba wrote on Twitter after a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian that Tehran did not support the war.
“Iran opposes the war in Ukraine and supports a peaceful solution,” he wrote in a short message, referring to Hussein Amir-Abdollahian’s visit to Moscow on Tuesday. “I wanted my message to be conveyed in Moscow: Russia must stop bombing civilians, commit to a ceasefire and leave Ukraine.”
Russia ordered a military strike on Ukraine on the morning of Thursday, February 24. This development came days after Moscow formally recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine.
Russia says Ukraine has not fulfilled its obligations under the Minsk agreements reached in 2014 and 2015 to resolve the dispute between separatists and Kiev. Vladimir Putin says Russia’s military operation is aimed at “demilitarizing Ukraine” and “de-Naziizing” the country.
Hours after the Russian invasion, Ukraine announced that it had cut off all diplomatic ties with the country. Western nations have repeatedly imposed sanctions on Russia, including several of its banks, cut off Swift’s messenger system. The United States has also banned oil imports from Russia.
