Twitter closes 3,500 Chinese, Russian, Mexican, Venezuelan, Ugandan and Tanzanian accounts.
The social network Twitter said in a statement that it had blocked and deleted about 3,500 Twitter accounts in various countries because of what it called participating in a government political campaign.
The social network Twitter announced on Friday that the company has blocked and deleted 3465 Twitter accounts that the network claims are involved in government information and propaganda operations.
The move comes as Jack Dorsey, one of the leading social media figures whose name has been linked to Twitter, recently resigned as CEO and was replaced by Parag Agrawal.
According to Al Jazeera, the accounts are mainly from China, Mexico, Russia, Tanzania, Uganda and Venezuela.
Most of the 2084 Twitter accounts are affiliated with the Chinese Communist government, tweeting about the treatment of the Uighur minority in China’s Xinjiang province, the social network Twitter said in a statement. Another 112 accounts belonging to the local government of China in Xinjiang province and working on “Chang Yu culture” have also been removed.
The media and Western countries claim that the Uyghur minority in China has been tortured and released and that human rights violations have taken place against them. The Chinese government has consistently denied the allegations.
