Afghan refugees in Turkey have been beaten by Turkish police in protest of their plight.
Turkish police have cracked down on protests by Afghan refugees and beaten a number of them.
Dozens of Afghan refugees, mostly thousands of Afghans, are said to have been detained by Turkish police in Izmir.
One of the asylum seekers told the daily Information that at least 200 asylum seekers have been detained at a Turkish police station for the past two days and do not have access to adequate food and water.
He added that Turkish police only provide bread and water to asylum seekers in front of reporters’ cameras.
The asylum seeker said that today (Saturday, May 14), when the asylum seekers protested, they were beaten by the Turkish police.
He added that Turkish police had sprayed tear gas on a number of asylum seekers, including children and women. The asylum seeker also said that a woman was injured by a stone thrown by the Turkish police.
Videos of Turkish police violence against Afghan refugees have also been posted on social media. In one of these videos, the face of a bloody woman is seen screaming.
Turkey is a transit point for refugees from Afghanistan to European countries. After the Taliban took control, the migration of Afghan citizens has increased, some of them through the Iranian-Turkish border.
