About 54 percent of the United States is a maternity ward, many of them in rural or disadvantaged neighborhoods. “Access to quality health care is a human right,” said Charles Redding, chairman and CEO of MedShare, a nonprofit that works to help improve lives and the planet. Reading has directly observed how differences affect people of color.
In the United States, many women of color have to seek out free safety net clinics to meet basic health care needs. “Most of these are the only source of health care they receive,” says Reading. Safety network clinics are often run by volunteers and rely on resources donated by charities.
