The United States handed over a Guantanamo detainee to the Taliban.
A Taliban spokesman has announced the release of an Afghan prisoner after 15 years in US custody at Guantanamo.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the United States had released an Afghan national named Assadullah Harun from Guantanamo Bay.
Mujahid tweeted: Aaron is one of two Afghan citizens who were imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay and was released after the Taliban interacted with the United States.
According to Mujahid, the Qatari government has paved the way for this interaction. He stressed that efforts are underway to secure the release of other Afghan prisoners held abroad.
Assadullah Haroon has been detained at Guantanamo since 2007.
US forces have identified him as the commander of extremist militias and an “al-Qaeda courier” who was initially identified as a “dangerous suspect in terrorism”.
Earlier, the New York Times published secret and unpublished images of the first Guantanamo detainees.
The photos, published by the New York Times, show men in chains, blindfolded and blindfolded as they enter the controversial prison in 2002.
