The UAE and Syria signed the first cooperation agreement in 10 years.
The UAE signed a cooperation agreement today on the construction of a power plant on the Damascus Reef, following the Foreign Minister’s visit to Syria and meeting with Syrian officials.
According to Sanaa, under the agreement, a 300-megawatt photovoltaic power plant will be built with 100 percent funding for the project by providing a 10-year repayment facility after each part of the project is operational.
Under the agreement, electricity generation is expected to be about 500 million kWh per year, and the project will supply about 125,000 tonnes of fuel per year.
An Emirati delegation led by Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan traveled to Damascus last Tuesday.
The UAE Foreign Minister also met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and discussed the development of bilateral cooperation in various fields, trying to discover new horizons of cooperation, especially in important areas.
Abdullah bin Zayed’s visit to Damascus and meeting with Bashar al-Assad was widely reported in the media today, 10 years later. According to news sources, bin Zayed has talked with the Syrian president about the return of Damascus to the Arab League and the end of Syria’s political isolation.
