The Secretary-General appreciates Iran for holding a meeting with Afghanistan’s neighbors.
In a video message on the situation in Afghanistan and the situation of Afghan refugees, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday night thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for holding a meeting with Afghanistan’s neighbors.
“I thank the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran for holding this meeting at such a critical time,” Guterres said at the beginning of the video message.
“Afghanistan is facing an indescribable humanitarian crisis and is in a catastrophic state in terms of development,” he said.
“Despite the difficulties, the United Nations has launched a large-scale humanitarian operation in Afghanistan,” Guterres said. “We are working with the Taliban. “They have gradually given us more access to the requested areas and provided security [to UN staff] if necessary.”
“International support for host countries must be commensurate with the scale of the needs,” the UN Secretary-General said in support of countries hosting Afghan refugees. “These are all issues in which the whole region has common interests, and we should all be united in this regard.”
