The president of Mexico called for the destruction of the “Statue of Liberty” in the United States.
The president of Mexico says that if the founder of the whistle-blowing site WikiLeaks is sentenced to the maximum sentence in the United States, the Statue of Liberty should be destroyed because it will no longer be a symbol of freedom.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Monday evening that if WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is extradited to the United States and convicted, he will seek to dismantle the Statue of Liberty in New York.
Lopez said during a press conference at the presidential palace: “If he (Assange) is taken to the United States and sentenced to the maximum sentence and death in prison, we must start a campaign to dismantle the Statue of Liberty – donated by the French, which is located in New York. Because this statue is no longer a symbol of freedom.
According to “Ryanovsti” website, he also announced that he will once again raise the issue of the possibility of punishing the founder of WikiLeaks in the negotiations with “Joe Biden”, the President of the United States.
Lopez also recalled that he had previously asked former US President Donald Trump to pardon Assange.
Earlier, WikiLeaks reported that British Home Secretary Priti Patel has agreed to extradite Assange to the United States and he will likely face a sentence of 175 years in prison.
Assange is wanted by US authorities on 18 charges, including espionage, related to WikiLeaks’ release of a vast trove of classified US military records and diplomatic documents that they say endangered lives.
The British Ministry of Home Affairs also announced in a statement that on June 17th, after the General Court and the Supreme Court reviewed, an order was issued to extradite Assange to the United States.
According to Reuters, this decision does not mean the end of Australian-born Assange’s legal battle, which has been going on for more than a decade. He can appeal to the High Court in London, which must agree to continue the appeal. He could eventually seek to take his case to the UK Supreme Court; But if the appeal is rejected, Assange must be extradited within 28 days.
