The Pentagon predicts a fivefold increase in China’s nuclear weapons.
The Pentagon predicts in a new estimate today (Wednesday, November 3) that China’s nuclear weapons will increase fivefold over the next ten years.
According to Politico, the report states that China is likely to use at least 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030. The report claims that there were 200 warheads in the US arsenal until last year.
The new assessment is set out in China China’s annual military power report released Wednesday. Although China’s nuclear weapons are far smaller than those of the United States, the new report shows major changes from the US forecast compared to the previous year.
Last year, the Pentagon said the number of Chinese nuclear warheads would reach 400 by the end of this decade.
The day before, a US media outlet reported that China’s growing military progress and efforts to end US domination of the Asia-Pacific region had raised concerns in the Pentagon.
The Associated Press reports that US officials are concerned about China’s progress in various areas, including the development of its nuclear arsenal, its advances in cyber, missile and space technologies, and the Taiwan issue.
