According to the Wednesday issue of the “Middle East Eye” website, according to a study conducted by Rice University, black Muslims from the Middle East or Africa have been harassed by the police because of their religion more than white Muslims. The study shows that US Muslims are five times more likely to be harassed by the police, but Muslims who identify as white are less likely to be harassed by the police compared to non-white Muslims.
Surveys show that relations between Muslim communities and the American police have always been tense, and many Muslims distrust the police because of the post-9/11 surveillance conducted by the police.
The post-9/11 geopolitical environment has created a strained relationship between law enforcement and American Muslim communities, the report said.
Rice University research shows that many Muslim Americans fear police surveillance through measures such as online tracking, airport security, routine stops or surveillance of religious spaces.
The report states that more than 23 percent of black Muslims experienced police harassment.
In Chicago, more than half of reports of suspicious activity targeted Arabs and Muslims. In Chicago Police Department reports from 2016 to 2020, 53.6 percent of suspects were described as people of Arab descent.
The Pew Institute’s report also indicates an alarming increase in racial, ethnic and ideological discrimination in America.
