The Syrian government adviser said Syrians living abroad could also run in the presidential election, countries should respect the sovereign decision of the independent Syrian state.
The Syrian government adviser said Monday that the registration of presidential candidates is a step in the framework of the Syrian government’s rule and its insistence on one of the mechanisms for achieving democracy and not allowing a constitutional vacuum to be created, especially in the presidency.
“The announcement of registration for the elections reflects the right of the Syrian people to enjoy democracy and the most important civil and political rights, as well as the embodiment of the concept of the sovereignty of the nation,” Abdul Qadir Azouz told Sputnik radio.
Regarding the opposition to the presidential election, he said: “One should not take a political stand in advance, because the election is a decision-making process and a national right in which everyone should be together, especially since the election law sets general rules and criteria for candidates.” And its sixteenth chapter is devoted to the participation of undivided Syrians in Syria; So there are no exceptions (for those interested in candidacy) except within the framework of the rules.
The Syrian government adviser denied the direct connection between the elections and the work of the Constitutional Committee: “We have a constitution and we have an election law, which is a system that defines the mechanism for holding elections and the mechanism for protecting them.
Regarding the invitation of some countries to boycott the Syrian elections, Azzouz said: “There should be a positive and effective view in the framework of the election process, and these countries should respect the internal decision of an independent country in accordance with the principles of the United Nations.”
The Presidential elections for Syrians living abroad will be held on May 21, 2021 (May 31) and Syrians inside the country on May 26, 2021 (June 7), said Hamouda Sabbagh, Speaker of the Syrian Parliament (Parliament) on Sunday.
