Today (Sunday), a Syrian official told Al-Mayadin that contacts between the Jordanian and Syrian leaders began a year ago.
He said the recent contact between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Jordanian King Abdullah II was not the first of its kind.
The Syrian official stressed that more than one envoy of the King of Jordan has come to the Syrian Presidential Palace in the past year.
He added that a year ago was not a good time for Jordan to talk about its relationship with Damascus, but today is a good time.
The Syrian official stressed that any opening on relations with Syria would not change the country’s position on the Israeli regime, and that Damascus would not and would not change its position on normalizing relations with the Zionist regime.
He added that Syria sees the normalization of relations with Tel Aviv as a mistake that harms Arab and Palestinian interests. Any change in Syria’s position towards the Zionist regime means a waiver of rights, and this is not an issue.
The official added that Iran has not been mentioned in any recent talks with any Arab country. In the past, relations with Iran were a problem for Arab countries in relation to Syria.
He stressed that Syria would not withdraw from the fight against the Israeli regime and that Damascus would not enter into coalitions that were not in line with its interests and principles.
Last month (October), Jordanian news sources reported that the Shah had a telephone conversation with the Syrian president.
Jordan-Syria relations have recently improved after 10 years, and recently Jordanian and Syrian officials agreed to resume Jordanian flights to Syria on October 3rd (October 11th) after a two-day meeting in the Jordanian capital Amman.
