Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that government officials do not rule out the possibility that someone deliberately set fire to forests to harm the country.
According to Sputnik news agency, the recent widespread forest fires in Turkey, which started last week in parts of Antalya, have so far killed 6 people and left more than 400 injured.
In a recent statement on the current situation in Turkey as a result of widespread forest fires, Erdogan said a suspect in the fire had been arrested in the southwest.
The Turkish president did not elaborate on the name, identity or possible motive of the detainee for allegedly burning the forests, saying only that he was involved in the burning of the forest near the town of Milas in Mugla Province.
“We are investigating in detail the causes of the fires,” he added. “If (the cause of the fires) are traitors who can set fire to their homeland, they will be severely punished.”
The President of the Republic of Turkey yesterday declared a “state of disaster” in the affected areas following the widespread fires in the country’s forests.
The fire in Turkey started last week in “Antalya” and is spreading rapidly in the southern regions of the country. The fires have caused widespread evacuation of people from all over the coastal areas and many hotels in the resort towns of Bodrum and Marmaris.
