Stoltenberg revealed the main condition for Ukraine to join NATO.
According to Russia Today, even though Kyiv considers itself an unofficial member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says that in order for Ukraine to officially become a member of this alliance, one condition must be met.
At a meeting on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Stoltenberg said: NATO’s position on Ukraine’s membership has not changed. We agreed in 2008 that Kyiv would become a member of the coalition and this position is still the same.
He added: Of course, the important thing now is to ensure the victory of Ukraine as an independent country, because, without the realization of this, there is no way to discuss the future of NATO-Ukraine relations.
He also emphasized that the discussion and exchange of views on Ukraine joining NATO will take place after the current war is settled. NATO has emphasized for a long time that all countries that intend to join this alliance must first resolve their international, territorial, or ethnic disputes peacefully.
Ukrainian forces are currently training in several NATO countries, and members of this alliance are providing weapons and intelligence to Kyiv. Stoltenberg told reporters earlier this month that NATO countries have provided about $120 billion in weapons and financial aid to Kyiv. He pledged yesterday (Saturday) that this help and support will continue for an indefinite period, even at the cost of “intensification of tension”.
Although Ukraine’s formal accession to NATO remains a long way off, the country’s Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov, who has been rumored to resign, said last month that the country is already an unofficial member of NATO and will become an official member in the near future.
