In an interview with the UN envoy for Yemen, the US Secretary of State claimed that Washington supports a stable, united Yemen without foreign interference.
In an introductory call with Special Envoy Martin Griffiths on March 14, the Secretary expressed U.S. concern regarding the conflict in Yemen, particularly the humanitarian toll on the Yemeni people. He highlighted that the United States supports a unified, stable Yemen free from foreign influence, and that there is no military solution to the conflict.
The Secretary underscored that the United States’ efforts under Special Envoy Lenderking intend to reinvigorate diplomatic efforts, alongside the UN and others, to end the war in Yemen. The Secretary also expressed U.S. support for the UN Special Envoy’s efforts to bring all parties to consensus.
The Secretary conveyed his willingness to collaborate closely with Special Envoy Griffiths and the UN.
A State Department spokesman announced that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had consulted with UN Special Representative for Yemen Martin Griffiths on Sunday.
According to Reuters, Blinken spoke about Washington’s decision to step up diplomatic efforts alongside the UN to end the war in Yemen.
“Blinken has emphasized that the United States supports a stable, united, and foreign-influenced free Yemen, and told Griffiths that there is no military solution to the Yemeni crisis,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Saudi coalition, with the support of Western countries, including the United States, has been conducting military operations against Yemen and interfering in its internal affairs since 2015.
The United Nations has called the Yemeni crisis the worst humanitarian crisis in the world following the Saudi coalition’s devastating attacks on Yemen’s infrastructure.
Lincoln had previously called on Yemen’s Ansarallah to cease military operations in the city of Marib and attacks on Saudi Arabia and to resume peace talks.
The Yemeni army and popular committees have made great strides in the strategic province of Marib over the past few weeks and are now three kilometers from the provincial capital and the liberation of the city.
