Widespread and secret prevalence of Misyar marriage in Saudi Arabia.
Casual marriage (Misyar), which is a form of marriage that is performed almost without adherence to marital obligations and is usually performed in secret, has become widespread in Saudi Arabia.
Misyar marriage, which is legal in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and has been popular among Sunni Muslims in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries for decades, is a marriage in which a man and a woman do not live under the same roof permanently and the man has no obligation to provide place, food and alimony for women, but they have intercourse with each other. In this respect, the path is somewhat similar to the concubine or temporary marriage in the Shiite religion.
In Saudi Arabia, this type of marriage is very popular among men with lower incomes, but it also has many critics, AFP reports. Even some Sunni conservative clerics consider this kind of relationship between a man and a woman outside the framework of sharia marriage and consider it haram.
However, this type of relationship is very popular with some unmarried women and couples who want to find a religious cover for their sexual relations.
“The path to comfort, freedom and the possibility of lawful partnership between men and women,” a 40-year-old Saudi employee who has been in a relationship with a 30-year-old widow for more than two years told AFP.
He, who is married to his wife and is the father of three children, says that in addition, he goes to visit his other partner in Riyadh whenever he wants. He adds: “My new friend had 11 secret wives through Masyar marriage. “She is constantly divorcing one and marrying the other.”
Saudis and foreigners living in Saudi Arabia often use dating sites and apps to get married.
“Marriage is cheaper,” a 40-year-old Egyptian pharmacist told AFP in Riyadh. “He has no dowry or obligation.”
He sent his wife and five-year-old son to Cairo as the coronation began and the cost of living in Saudi Arabia increased, and he then began looking for a partner through this type of marriage. He then went on Instagram to intermediaries who perform the route of marriage and charge up to 5,000 rials (more than a thousand euros) for these services.
“I told the media about the characteristics of my favorite woman, including weight, height, color and skin, but so far no one was found,” said the Egyptian man.
According to a report in the local newspaper Al-Watan, citing sources in the Saudi Ministry of Justice in 2018, such marriages are often short-lived and most of them end after a period of 14 to 60 days.
