Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud expressed optimism about a rare comment on the preliminary talks between Riyadh and Tehran. Little is known about the talks.
“We have started some preliminary talks,” he told AFP, attending two international meetings in Paris. “They are still in the early stages, but we are hopeful.”
“If the Iranians know that their interests are in good relations with their neighbors, I can be hopeful,” Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud continued.
He also said that the impact of next month’s Iranian elections on the talks would be “minimal”: “We do not think there will be a big change. “There may be changes in the people who demonstrate this policy, but in the end what happens on the ground matters.”
Iran-Saudi Arabia relations deteriorated in 2016, and the two countries are said to have recently held talks mediated by Iraq.
