Takashi Okata, Japan’s ambassador to Afghanistan, also met with Taliban Deputy Prime Minister Maulvi Abdul Kabir last week and said the embassy would be reopened in Kabul on condition of security.
Meanwhile, a Taliban official announced that the United Arab Emirates has reopened its embassy in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.
Also on Sunday, the acting foreign minister of the Taliban interim government confirmed that the German government also wants to reopen its embassy in Kabul.
Amir Khan Mottaqi, the acting foreign minister of the Taliban interim government, told a foreign media outlet on Saturday that Germany intended to resume diplomatic activity in Afghanistan. He added that the German embassy in Kabul will be reactivated.
The slow reopening of embassies in Kabul comes as the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is reported to be dire. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that if one million international aid agencies do not help Afghanistan, one million Afghan children could die from severe malnutrition.
