Robert Gates: America’s polarization is the biggest threat to us.
Former United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said in an interview that the whole of American society seems to be losing its balance and that he has never seen this level of hatred.
Former United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said in an interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes program on Sunday that the sharp polarization of the United States is the biggest threat to “democracy.”
The Republican, who served in the administrations of eight US presidents, including as CIA director and later Secretary of Defense George W. Bush and Barack Obama, added that the biggest threat was within two miles. A square is found that encloses the White House and the Congress building.
Regarding the deadly attack on the US Congress on January 6, Gates said: “The attack on the Congress was the first time that the enemies of democracy have been present in Congress in armed form since the 1812 war. Seeing people entering Congress with the Confederate flag never happened in the Civil War.
“The same people who were horrified on January 6 and whose lives were in danger are now saying, ‘Well, these are just ordinary tourists,'” Gates said, citing Republican Rep. Andrew Clyde.
“It seems that our whole society is losing its balance,” the former US official said. I have never seen so much hatred.
The attack by Trump supporters on the US Capitol building marked his second congressional impeachment. However, Trump’s trial in the US Senate was opposed by Republicans and failed.
