Reuters reported today (Friday) quoting at least three Taliban sources that Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s political deputy, will head the new government in Afghanistan.
The sources said that Mullah Mohammad Yaqub, the son of Mullah Omar, the founder and former leader of the Taliban, and Shir Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, a senior Taliban official, would hold senior positions in the next Afghan government.
According to Fars, the Taliban announced yesterday that they will announce the new government of Afghanistan soon. Meanwhile, images released from the Presidential Palace show the Taliban preparing to announce their new government.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters that the exact date of the announcement was unknown, but that it would be announced in the next few days.
According to him, the legitimacy of this new government is very important for the world. Under Afghanistan, it is fighting serious problems such as drought and devastation caused by the conflict.
A senior Taliban official told Reuters last month that Taliban leader Mullah Hebatullah Akhundzadeh would have the final say in the Afghan ruling council, which is headed by the president.
Also, despite the Taliban’s insistence on forming an inclusive government in Afghanistan, Shir Mohammad Stanekzai, a senior Taliban official, said that members of the previous government would not be in the new cabinet.
On Tuesday, just hours after the last US plane left Afghanistan, some sources reported that Mullah Abdul Ghani, the brother of the Taliban’s political deputy, had traveled from Kandahar to Kabul.
Al-Jazeera quoted a Taliban official as saying that talks on forming a new government in Afghanistan were over and the results would be announced soon.
Earlier, a pro-Taliban media outlet reported that Mullah Hebatullah Akhundzadeh had begun meetings with other leaders of the group in Kandahar.
According to the report, the Taliban announced that the group’s leader and his deputy were holding consultations in Kandahar with tribal leaders and leaders.
According to a Taliban spokesman, the Taliban leadership meeting, which began on Saturday with the presence of Mullah Hebatullah Akhundzadeh, discussed in detail the current political, security and social issues in Afghanistan, including security situation, administrative order, transparency, protection of goods and Treasury facilities and people talked.
