Al-Ghogham, a Saudi Shiite legal activist, is from Qatif. Since the beginning of 2011, at the same time as the Islamic awakening, he became famous for his participation in peaceful protests in the Shiite region of “Qatif” in Saudi Arabia and abroad. Al-Ghogham asked the Saudi government to stop racial discrimination between Sunnis and Shiites who want justice and democracy and improve their living conditions. Saudi authorities started spreading rumors about him in August 2018.

After the criticism of the international community and human rights organizations, the death sentence against Esra al-Ghogham was canceled. The Terrorism Court issued preliminary sentences and sentenced him to 8 years in prison.
