Post workers, Teachers and University staff on strike in Scotland and across Britain.
Teachers in Scotland want 10% more pay, according to the newspaper “Passair Noye Presse”. Scottish Education Secretary Shirley Ann Somerville believes this is too much. The teachers have now stopped working.
Lessons have been canceled for almost all pupils in Scotland today due to teachers’ strike action. For the first time in nearly 40 years, teachers at primary and secondary schools and many local nurseries across this part of England have walked off the job in protest at proposed pay rises.
Only a few primary schools were open in Orkney and Shetland in the North Atlantic. According to the BBC, “Shirley Ann Somerville”, the Scottish education minister, rejected the request for a 10% increase in wages. He said that the offer of 6.85 percent more is a fair salary.
Strikes are currently underway in many other parts of the UK. Employees of 150 universities protested against low wages, working conditions and reduced pensioners’ salaries. On Thursday, employees of the postal service provider Royal Mail again stopped work for several days. The RMT rail union has also announced new strikes just days before Christmas and shortly after the New Year. The strikers are demanding an increase in their wages due to the increase in inflation.
