Pentagon: No sign of Chinese military assistance to Russia.
Rejecting reports of Chinese military aid to Russia in the wake of the Ukraine war, a Pentagon spokesman said he was optimistic about Finland and Sweden joining NATO.
US Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby said Thursday morning that they had not yet seen any signs of Chinese military assistance to Russia.
“There will be new and routine aid packages aimed at meeting the needs of Ukrainians,” Kirby told a daily news conference at the Pentagon about US assistance to Ukraine.
“Ukraine is an independent country and its president decides on the end of the war,” he was quoted as saying by US media. “
Asked about the fate of Sweden and Finland’s application for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a Pentagon spokesman said: “We are optimistic that Sweden and Finland will join NATO.”
He has previously said that the membership or non-membership of countries in NATO has nothing to do with Russia, and stressed that the United States should support Sweden and Finland as candidates for NATO membership, if necessary.
“We have not seen any sign of Chinese military assistance to Russia,” Kirby said in response to some concerns about possible Chinese assistance to Russia in the wake of the Ukraine war.
“We can not confirm the report of the two Americans detained in Ukraine,” he said when asked about the detention of two American soldiers by Russia during the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
