New American ambassador for Qatar.
US President Joe Biden has appointed US diplomat Timmy Davis as US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Qatar.
According to Al-Khalij Online, “Davis” was appointed to replace “John DeRochere”, who has been working as a manager since June.
“Davis” was a senior monitoring officer at the US State Department’s Operations Center, a special assistant to the secretary of state, director of Iraqi affairs at the National Security Council, and deputy chief of staff of the presidential special envoy to fight ISIS.
He also holds the office of the deputy head of the political affairs office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the deputy chief of staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has won several awards and medals.
In March, Davis was nominated by Biden to hold the post of the US Embassy in Qatar.
This American diplomat was previously the US Consul General in Basra and southern Iraq and had diplomatic activities in Guatemala, Australia and Colombia.
Qatar is one of America’s main partners in the world and one of its most prominent allies at the level of the member states of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council and the region.
“Mahmoud Alloush”, a political analyst on the importance of relations between Doha and Washington, told Al-Khalij Online: Qatar’s important role is that it is considered as a communication channel between the Taliban and the United States, and is fully involved in the conflicts between Iran and other GCC member states. It has not been done, in addition to being important as a major gas producing country, and all these cases are issues that make the importance of Qatar vital for the interests of the United States in some international issues.
Alloush emphasized that what has made Qatar a special ally of the United States at the level of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council is its non-entry into the war in Yemen, which has created tension in the relations between the United States and Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Regarding the Qatar gas issue, he also stated that Qatar is one of the largest exporters of liquefied gas in the world and the United States is trying to use this country as a guarantor for the continuation of gas exports to Europe due to the Ukraine war. But it is not clear that Doha can play the role that America intends.
Alloush explained that Qatar is currently producing gas at full capacity and exports the majority of its gas to Asian countries, and that is due to long-term contracts that cannot be violated.
According to this political analyst, Qatar sells part of its gas in the market and outside of long-term contracts that it can export to Europe, but this amount is not enough to meet Europe’s total gas needs in case of a gas cut by Russia.
Recently, the closeness of relations between Washington and Doha was very remarkable, and one of the reasons for that was their role in the Afghanistan crisis, where the Qataris played a special role in curbing the developments after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.
The rapprochement of relations between the two countries culminated in a request by the US Congress in January 2022 to include Qatar in the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2022.
