Macron’s confession of facts; “We brutally massacred the Algerians.”
The French president finally confessed to the massacre of Algerian citizens in Paris sixty years ago, saying it was an unforgivable crime.
The French president on Saturday called the bloody crackdown on Algerian protesters by police in Paris 60 years ago an “unforgivable crime.”
According to Reuters, the office of French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement that the Algerian march was brutally, violently and bloodily suppressed, adding that about 12,000 Algerians were arrested, many injured and dozens killed.
Macron attended the d event in western Paris, where some Algerians began marching 60 years ago. “Macron confessed to the facts,” the Elysee Palace said in a statement. “The crimes committed that night under the command of Maurice Papon are unjustifiable for France.”
The massacre has long been denied or concealed by French authorities. The first commemorations of the event were held in 2001 by the mayor of Paris.
On October 17, 1961, on the orders of the then Paris Police Chief, Maurice Papon, police attacked 25,000 Algerian demonstrators. The exact number of victims has never been determined, but some historians put the death toll at more than 200.
This year’s commemoration comes amid diplomatic tensions between Paris and Algeria. Earlier this month, Algeria summoned its ambassador to Paris, citing Macron’s remarks that Algerian rulers had rewritten their colonial history on the grounds of “hatred of France.”
Algeria was under French colonization for 132 years. The country has repeatedly apologized to Paris for crimes against humanity during the colonial era; A wish that never came true.
Algerian Prime Minister Ayman bin Abdul Rahman recently referred to recent remarks by Emmanuel Macron, saying that the insulting remarks made against Algeria were unacceptable and rejected.
Macron recently questioned the existence of the Algerian people before French colonization, saying that the political system in Algeria had rewritten the country’s history out of hatred of France.
“During his visit to the city of Vahran, the Algerian prime minister stressed:” Algeria is bigger than all the words that are said to undermine its history and roots. “
“Algeria is a nation that stands and shines in history,” Abdel Rahman said.
