Jordan’s delay in supporting Saudi Arabia against Lebanon.
The Jordanian foreign minister backed Saudi Arabia’s position a week after tensions between Saudi Arabia and Lebanon erupted.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi stressed his opposition to any insults to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states.
“In Jordan, we consider the security of Saudi Arabia and the security of the Gulf (Persian Gulf) as part of the security of Jordan, and with any aggression,” al-Safadi told a joint news conference with his Irish counterpart, Simon Cavani, who traveled to Amman, Jordan, on Thursday. “We oppose this security and any insult to our brothers in Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf.”
Following the recent publication of an interview with Lebanese Information Minister George Qardahi on the need to end the war in Yemen, Saudi Arabia responded by calling on its ambassador to Beirut and urging the Lebanese ambassador to Saudi Arabia to leave the country.
The UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain immediately recalled their ambassadors from Beirut and expelled the Lebanese ambassador to their country, stressing that this was a sign of solidarity with Saudi Arabia. Jordan has now backed Saudi Arabia’s irrational stance against Lebanon, compared to Riyadh’s close allies.
According to the Jordanian website Amun, al-Safadi also said that we are working with Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries in the Persian Gulf and other friends in the international community to find a solution to the Yemeni crisis.
The Jordanian Foreign Minister also stressed the need to find a solution to end the Yemeni crisis: “Our position in Jordan is firm and we must work to end this tragedy in Yemen, and in this regard, Security Council Resolution 2216, the results of the dialogue. “The national agreement and the Riyadh agreement are the basis for progress and achieving a solution to end this crisis.”
