ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack on a gas pipeline in Syria.
The ISIS terrorist group on Saturday claimed responsibility for an attack on the main gas pipeline southeast of the Syrian capital, which cut off electricity to Damascus and surrounding areas.
According to AFP, the terrorist group said in a statement that it had blown up the main pipeline between the Tishrin and Deir Ali thermal power plants in the attack.
Syrian Electricity Minister Ghassan al-Zamil said on Saturday that the Deir Ali station in southeastern Damascus supplies more than 50 percent of the country’s electricity needs.
At the same time, the Syrian Ministry of Oil and Resources announced the resumption of the operation of the Syrian gas pipeline after its completion.
Syria’s oil and gas infrastructure is one of the targets of the country’s militias and terrorist groups.
The Syrian war has destroyed power networks and oil and gas infrastructure throughout the country since 2011.
Syria’s largest oil fields in the northeast are also occupied by the United States and its allies, and Western sanctions have hampered foreign fuel imports. Hence, the Syrian people face power outages for up to 20 hours a day.
