Iraq appreciates Riyadh-Damascus reconciliation۔
On Thursday night, the Iraqi “Al-Malouma” news site reported the resumption of diplomatic relations between Damascus and Riyadh and the statement of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry welcoming the reconciliation between the two countries.
Based on this report, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced in its statement yesterday, “Baghdad hopes that the efforts of Saudi and Syria will increase FIMA solidarity between the two countries and benefit the activities of Arab countries.”
It is stated in this statement that “Iraq supports any efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and strongly supports the end of the Syrian crisis through peaceful means.”
This statement adds, “We are ready to coordinate with the countries of the world on the way to return Syria to the Arab environment, and we will not hesitate to make any efforts to end the crises in the region.”
Syrian Foreign Minister “Faisal al-Maqdad” arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday evening (last day). Following this trip, the two sides announced an agreement to resume consular services and flights between the two countries.
At the end of the Syrian Foreign Minister’s visit to Jeddah on Thursday night, Riyadh and Damascus announced an agreement to start flights between the capitals of the two countries and to resume consular services after years of disconnection.
This was the first visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister to Saudi Arabia since 2012. In March 2012, Saudi Arabia closed its embassy in Damascus and severed diplomatic relations with the Syrian government.
Earlier, “Sputnik” news agency reported that after ten years of breaking relations, Saudi Arabia plans to reopen its consulate in Damascus.
