Referring to the Non-Aligned Movement’s emphasis on the importance of concluding a comprehensive convention to combat international terrorism, Iran’s ambassador and deputy representative to the United Nations stressed the responsibility of member states in implementing the counter-terrorism strategy.
Zahra Ershadi, Ambassador and Deputy Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations in New York, addressed the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly during a speech by the Non-Aligned Movement under the agenda of “Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism.” “The Non-Aligned Movement has condemned and rejected terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including state terrorism, and reiterated its support for the provisions of Resolution 46.51 of the General Assembly of December 9, 1991 and other relevant UN resolutions.” Declares the legitimacy of the struggles of the people under foreign domination for freedom and the exercise of the right to self-determination.
He added: “The Non-Aligned Movement reaffirms that terrorist acts are a clear violation of international law, including international humanitarian law and human rights, especially the right to life, and leads to a complete lack of human rights and fundamental freedoms.” He sees this kind of action as endangering the territorial integrity and stability of states, as well as national, regional and international security, which affects the stability of nations and the foundations of societies and has adverse consequences on the process of economic and social development, destroying physical infrastructure and It becomes the economy of governments.
Ershadi added: “The Non-Aligned Movement reaffirms its respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all countries in accordance with the UN Charter.”
The representative of Iran pointed out: The Non-Aligned Movement emphasizes that terrorism should not be equated with the legitimate struggle of the people under the domination of colonialists or foreigners and foreign occupation to determine their own destiny and national liberation. The Non-Aligned Movement emphasizes that the repression of foreign-occupied people must continue to be recognized as the most severe form of terrorism and the use of state power to suppress and use violence against people fighting foreign occupiers for their inalienable rights.
The Iranian diplomat stated: “Terrorism cannot and should not be linked to any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group, and it should be used to justify terrorism or counter-terrorism actions, which include invading the privacy of individuals.”
