According to the Russian news agency Tass, 81 US senators voted in favor of the $ 40 billion aid package to Ukraine and 11 opposed it, so the time allotted to discuss the package is limited to 30 hours. It is expected that in the final Senate vote on May 18 (Wednesday, May 28), most senators will support the package, so that after that, US President Joe Biden can sign it and make it law.
Last week, the US House of Representatives passed a bill to increase Washington’s aid to Ukraine, which was supported by all Democrats in the US House of Representatives and a majority of Republicans in the House, and opposed by 57 Republicans.
Biden had previously asked Congress for more funding to help Ukraine fight Russia. He initially pledged $ 33 billion in aid to Kyiv, which was later increased to $ 40 billion in Congress.
The Biden administration says the additional funding will go to Ukraine for military equipment as well as food aid, and will therefore provide about $ 20 billion in direct military aid, including training Ukrainian troops and replenishing US weapons stockpiles.
