Indian Prime Minister: We are neutral in Russia’s war with Ukraine.
In an interview with an American newspaper, on the eve of his trip to America, the Prime Minister of India emphasized his country’s neutrality in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
On Tuesday, on the eve of his trip to Washington, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an interview with an American newspaper, emphasized his country’s neutrality in Russia’s war with Ukraine and the necessity of continuing diplomatic efforts to end this conflict.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Modi said that India is in favor of peace in the conflicts between Russia and Ukraine.
“Some say we are neutral,” Modi said. But we are not neutral. We are on the side of peace.”
“I think India’s position is well-known and well-understood in the whole world,” said the Indian Prime Minister in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. The world has full confidence that India’s top priority is peace.”
Modi added: “All countries should respect international laws and the sovereignty of countries. Disputes should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue, not through war.”
Modi is leaving for the US as India’s economic ties with the US have strengthened in recent years. The trade between the two countries will reach 191 billion dollars in 2022. Modi is scheduled to meet the President of the country, Joe Biden, at the White House after his speech at the US Congress.
In this interview, the Prime Minister of India said that he has talked several times with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about ending the war.
India also has close relations with Russia, and about 50% of its military equipment, including weapons, ammunition, tanks, fighters, and S-400 air defense systems, are supplied by Russia.
