Sanctions on the president’s wife and seven senior Nicaraguan government officials.
The European Union (EU) has announced new sanctions against eight senior Nicaraguan government officials, including Rosaria Morillo, vice president and wife of President Daniel Ortega, for human rights abuses.
According to the report, the Council of Europe also announced that the sanctions would include freezing the assets of these people and barring them from entering the member states of the union.
Including the eight, the number of sanctioned political figures in Nicaragua is said to have risen to 14.
“The political use of the judiciary, the exclusion of candidates from elections and the arbitrary removal of opposition parties are contrary to fundamental democratic principles and are a serious violation of the rights of the people of Nicaragua,” the Council of Europe said in a statement.
It should be noted that the President of Nicaragua has arrested and imprisoned his main rivals following the presidential election and shut down his opposition parties.
The recent arrest of the seventh possible presidential candidate shows the level of repression in Nicaragua and a bitter picture for the upcoming elections, the Council of the European Union said in a statement.
