Erdogan’s order to investigate the fall of lira.
According to Reuters, following the historic fall of the Turkish lira against the dollar, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered an investigation into possible manipulation of the value of the Turkish currency.
As the Turkish lira continued to depreciate, Turkish citizens took to the streets in Istanbul and Ankara last week to protest against the government.
Criticizing the government’s economic policies, the protesters accused Ankara officials of mismanagement in the area and demanded their resignation.
Demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Justice and Development Party resigns”, “We are drowning” and “We can not afford it”.
Istanbul police blockade Taksim Square to prevent protesters from gathering.
This is the second sharp devaluation of the lira in Turkish history.
