Dramatic increase in armed violence in American schools.
The results of a new report report a significant increase in armed violence in American schools.
A recently published report shows that in the academic year of 2021-22, American schools witnessed the highest number of gun shooting incidents in the past decade.
Everytown For Gun Safety, a non-profit group, reported that the number of gun incidents has more than tripled since last school year.
This group, which works to reduce armed violence, stated in this report that between August 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022, about 193 “incidents related to gun shooting” occurred in preschool and K-12 schools.
The number of such incidents reported in the academic year 2020-21 was 62. The highest record related to this statistic was for the academic year 2018-19, in which 75 cases were recorded.
This non-profit group has been monitoring armed violence in schools since 2013.
This report states that the incidents that took place last year led to the death of 59 people due to shooting and wounding of 138 others.
In this report, a “firearm-related incident” is defined as an event in which “a firearm is fired on or at a school campus or yard.”
Over the past years, there have been dozens of shootings in American schools, but the number of people killed in these incidents was in the single digits until the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in the state of Colorado. Since then, the number of shootings in which more than 10 people were killed has increased.
