Despite $ 1.2 billion in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, only $ 135 million has been disbursed so far, according to the United Nations website.
The United Nations has released a statement urging donor countries to pay for their aid as soon as possible so that the immediate humanitarian needs of the people of Afghanistan can be met.
“We need an international partnership based on an understanding with the Taliban leadership,” said Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.
“Despite the generous response to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call at the Geneva summit in September for aid to Afghanistan, the country is facing such an unfavorable situation,” Griffiths said, noting the need for the international community to pay close attention to the situation in Afghanistan.
He stressed that a total of more than $ 1 billion in humanitarian aid had been pledged at the meeting, although it had not yet reached the United Nations in full.
“The main issue in Afghanistan is not having money, but reaching the needy,” said the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.
“We need an international partnership based on understanding with the Taliban leadership so that we can work effectively for the people of Afghanistan across the country,” he said.
