Death of children by gun violence hit a record in the US.
The results of a new study show that the number of deaths caused by firearms among children in the United States has reached a record.
Firearm-related deaths among children in the United States hit a new record in 2021, according to a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.
This study shows that in 2021, nearly 4,752 children were killed by gunshots. This figure is equivalent to 5.8 deaths per 100,000 people, which is equivalent to an 8.8% increase compared to last year.
Between 2018 and 2021, child firearm deaths have increased by 41.5%.
“Firearm purchases were high during the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in approximately 30 million children living in homes with firearms,” the researchers wrote.
Child gun deaths disproportionately affect children in communities of color.
According to the study, nearly 50 percent of children who died by firearms in 2021 were black, and black children had the “largest increase in the death rate” from 2020 to 2021.
In terms of firearm deaths in 2021, the death rate for black children was 11 times higher than for white children.
Nearly 85 percent of children who died from firearms in 2021 were male, and the rate of firearm deaths among males has increased since 2018.
