Damascus: Well-known countries have provided weapons to ISIS.
Syria’s representative to the United Nations said in a speech at the international body that well-known countries have been supplying the weapons needed by terrorist groups for the past 10 years, led by ISIS.
In his speech, Bassam Sabbagh, Syria’s representative to the United Nations, stressed the need for the international community to ensure that weapons do not reach terrorist organizations.
Speaking at a meeting at the United Nations, he said: “Over the past ten years, well-known countries have provided the weapons needed by terrorist groups, led by ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra, with a variety of weapons, which has prolonged the crisis and “The lives of Syrian citizens were lost.”
“Some well-known countries’ financing of terrorist groups to buy weapons with the aim of creating insecurity in other countries is a gross violation of the UN Charter and the principles of international law and friendly relations between countries,” Sabbagh added.
He added that easy access to small arms and light weapons for terrorist organizations poses a threat to international security and stability, and endangers the lives of civilians, including women and children.
The Syrian envoy to the United Nations called for a framework for joint efforts to prevent the smuggling and trafficking of arms.
