Cuba: America embargoes us because it could not raise a popular uprising.
Reacting to the new US sanctions, Cuba’s foreign minister said Washington is seeking to discredit the victory of Cubans over imperialist aggression after unsuccessfully trying to incite a popular uprising in Cuba in 2021.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla said that the imposition of new sanctions by Washington is an attempt to discredit the Cuban society’s resistance to US aggression.
According to the Russian news agency “Tass”, he wrote on his Twitter: “Regarding the unsuccessful attempt to incite a popular uprising in Cuba in 2021, the US government and its Secretary of State are seeking to discredit the victory of the people over imperialist aggression.” Their repeated coercive actions violate international laws and the UN Charter.
On Saturday, the US government imposed visa sanctions on 28 Cuban officials whom Washington accuses of suppressing civil unrest last July and also restricting access to information. The US State Department did not release the names of those people, but said in a statement that the restrictions include high-ranking members of the Cuban Communist Party and officials who work in the country’s government communications and media sectors.
Last July, riots broke out in several Cuban cities, and Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel called on his supporters to take to the streets to prevent provocations against the government. Cuban authorities blamed the United States for organizing the riots.
The Cuban government says Cold War-era US economic sanctions, along with efforts to fuel protests on the island, are aimed at toppling the communist government.
