China’s sharp private warnings about Pelosi’s possible visit to Taiwan.
Informed sources say that the Chinese government has sent harsh and warning private messages to the American government about the possible trip of the Speaker of the House of Representatives to Taiwan.
Despite China’s strong opposition and repeated warnings to American officials not to interfere in Taiwan’s affairs, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is said to be planning to visit Taipei.
The “Financial Times” newspaper reported Sunday morning that China has given strong private warnings to the administration of US President Joe Biden about Pelosi’s possible visit to Taiwan in August.
Six sources familiar with the matter told the newspaper that China’s new warnings are significantly sharper than threats Beijing has made in the past if it is unhappy with US actions or policies towards Taiwan.
According to the Reuters news agency, citing this report, it is said that these private messages warning China included a possible military response.
The White House National Security Council and the US State Department declined to comment on the Financial Times report.
Earlier, “Zhao Lijian”, the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, had warned that there would be bad consequences for America if Pelosi visits Taiwan. (More details)
Nancy Pelosi is planning to visit Taiwan and provide military aid to the region, while the Pentagon announced last Friday that the US State Department has approved the potential sale of military technical assistance to Taiwan worth about $108 million.
The US Department of Defense has announced that Taiwan has requested the latest assistance, including spare parts and repairs for tanks and combat vehicles, and technical and logistical support from the US government and contractors.
Beijing considers Taiwan to be a part of China’s territory and evaluates the actions of the United States and the sale of arms to Taiwan as a violation of its sovereignty and contrary to the “One China” policy. Recently, the US government signed a bill of hundreds of billions of dollars for the US military budget, a significant part of which has been allocated to counter China and support Taiwan.
